Plantronics/Poly Savi W720-M Wireless Headset

This version of the Savi W720 is for use with Skype for Business. It is not related to the operating system of your computer. If you do not have this software please go to the standard version.

The new Plantronics/Poly Savi W720 is part of the latest 700 all-in-one series and is a unique binaural headset (2 ears) that works with all your devices (office phone + computer + mobile phone). What makes is so special is this is only of one two binaural headset models that offer all in one connectivity.

However, it is very important to note that the W720 will not work with your mobile phone when outside of the office. If you are after a headset that works on the road too then you need to check out the Jabra Motion Office ML . If it’s just for in and around the office then the 720 is a great choice.

If you’re looking to answer calls away from your desk you'll need an HL10 handset lifter or an Electronic Hook Switch depending on the phone you have (call our staff for assistance). This device fits on your telephone base and lifts the hand piece up or down when you push a button on your headset, letting you answer and hang up on calls from anywhere in the office. A handset lifter for this headset is available separately, or as a great value pack.

This is a very exceptional and unique headset

So let’s start by reviewing…

The Good

The Plantronics/Poly W720 offers the longest talk time (9 hours) and being binaural it’s very comfortable for all day wearing. If you spend more than 4 hours a day on the phone manufacturers actually recommend binaural for your hearing.

The one touch controls for call answer/end, vol +/-, mute and flash are the same no matter whether you’re on your desk phone, your computer or your mobile phone. This is easy and makes switching between different applications a breeze.

The sound quality as you’d expect from Plantronics/Poly is brilliant. With the 2 ears it’s even better as you cut out so much background noise. Plus the headset comes with excellent noise cancelling too. The 720 also utilizes the latest DECT wireless technology and wideband audio. In fact, Plantronics/Poly claim that the 720 Enhanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology produces even more natural voice sounds than ever before.

One very smart addition to the W720 is Voice-dedicated DECT™ technology. This eliminates the possibility of interference with other wireless devises and uses a voice only signal. This is so clever but so logical and their R&D team really deserve kudos for this.

The Plantronics/Poly W720 also offers users their latest adaptive power system that increases or reduces power consumption, based on how far you walk away from the base station. This translates to extended battery life and gives you up to 9 hours talk time. Combine that with a rapid top-up recharge and you can walk and talk all day!

The Plantronics/Poly 720 wireless headset also features important SoundGuard technology. Without this feature you could potentially suffer from temporary/permanent hearing loss. This protects phone users from loud, potentially harmful noises. These acoustic shocks are transmitted down phone lines as a result of dangerous customers yelling, blowing whistles, electricity spikes, weather conditions, transmission faults and the like. Plantronics/Poly SoundGuard means you’ll be protected whenever you are using your 720 headset.

The Plantronics/Poly 720 also allows you to conference in other 700 series headset users (up to 3). This is a brilliant feature in call centres and where a manager may need to get on the line.

The Not-So-Good

Binaural headsets are always a love/hate item. Some people don’t like the fact that you can’t hear what’s going on around you. If you are on reception for example and have to greet people then it can be difficult. Others still find binaural models too bulky. That said, if you’re on the phone all day binaural is the best you can do – comfort, clarity and safe from a hearing-health perspective.

You have to also keep in mind that all-in-one units like the 720 can be slightly more expensive. You’re paying for the extra convenience. Before you buy a W720 you really need to work out what connectivity you actually need. Also you need to remember that the 720 only connects to your mobile within the confines of your office and can’t be taken on the road. The only headset that does that is the Jabra Motion Office ML.

Furthermore, if you don’t even need the computer connectivity and just need a wireless headset for your office phone then check out the cheaper office phone only headsets.

The Verdict

There are only a couple of headsets that do everything and if you’re after a genuine all-in- one for in and out of the office then it’s the Jabra Motion Office ML. If it’s in office then the Plantronics/Poly 720 binaural wireless headset is a great product and a great buy.

Other Headsets You Should Consider Before Buying

The only headset that does everything in the office and still offers the binaural style is the the Jabra Pro 9465 - it's excellent excellent so make sure you also look at this. It offers a very cool touch screen and is an excellent headset and arguably better. If you don’t need binaural then you can also check out the Savi W710 monaural and Savi W730 with their purpose built wearing styles. We could say save a few dollars for the CS520 but if you look at the pricing you’ll pay about the same for a whole lot less. For a headset that works both in and out of the office on all devices, have a look at the Jabra Motion Office ML. Like we say, at this level, you really can’t go wrong.

If you install Plantronics/Poly Hub (plantronics.com/us/support/software-downloads/ and click on download button) then connect the base unit of the headset to a PC you can enable BT via the this interface under 'settings' OR

Press these 2 buttons together for several seconds... Subscription button (bottom left of base unit, below the Bluetooth button (it has a green light) + the mobile phone button in the top edge of the base unit. The light will flash green 4 times indicate BT is enabled (if you need to disable, repeat the process till you see 4 red flashes.)
