The 920 has been designed as an office phone-only handset, and because of the way all wireless headsets connect, it's conveniently compatible with practically any brand phone. Unless you're on the hunt for specific features, or a unit that's compatible with a Unified Communications system, you'll probably find that the Jabra Pro 920 delivers everything you need in a headset - and at a great price.

The main question you need to ask yourself here is, "Why would I spend more?" And as we said earlier, unless you're after a multi-use headset or very specific features, you might struggle to find the answer.

Here's what we thought about the Jabra Pro 920...

The Good

In the under $250 price range, the Jabra Pro 920 headset is definitely a winner. The durable and functional design offers up to 8 hours of talk time, with handy status indication lighting on the base units.

This unit incorporates Jabra's Enhanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology, digitally optimising voice and music, and suppressing echoes - so it goes without saying that the sound quality for this unit is good. As with all wireless headsets, it has a noise-cancelling microphone, which, if used in a standard office environment, eliminates much of the background noise for your caller (if it's very noisy and your staff struggle to focus, you may prefer a duo-style, such as the Jabra Pro 920 Duo). If you work in a high-noise environment, there are some headsets with ultra noise-cancellation available. Unless it is an absolute must, you'll find the Jabra Pro 920 does a good job of minimising interference from general surrounding noise.

The Jabra pro 920 is compatible with a headset lifter, or electronic hook switch, that can be fitted onto your telephone to lift the handpiece up and down. It's convenience that means you can answer calls from anywhere in the office, with a simple press of a button on the headpiece itself. Finally, we can't go past mentioning yet another fantastic feature that comes in very handy when training or monitoring staff - the ability to conference up to three additional headsets. The Not-So-Good

The biggest downfall with the Jabra Pro 920 (and basically any phone-only wireless headset) is the fact it will only connect to your office desk phone, and isn't compatible with your computer. This might not be a major concern for you at the moment, but it's worth mentioning that the future of office communications is moving towards voice and computer convergence, which means that more people are using their headsets for office IP applications like VoIP (internet calls - think Skype), and voice -recognition software, such as Dragon and MacSpeech. If your business is planning a transition into this new era of Unified Communications, you might want to consider a headset that will come along for the ride and, if that's the case, this is not the headset you're looking for. It's only compatible to work with your office desk phone...period.

The Jabra Pro 920 is an over the head only-style headset, however, if you do want the convenience of an ear hook, you can pick one up from the accessories tab above. It will do the trick very nicely. We don't find this headset uncomfortable or awkward but, if you want to, you can pay a little extra for an even more comfortable fit.

We know this isn't the most beautiful headset you'll ever see. It looks basic, it feels basic - hell, it IS basic - BUT at this price, if you're looking to impress the Boss with your budget-savvy suggestions, or just want something simple to use, this is it. Overall, it does the job it says it will do -and it does it well.

The Verdict

If you're looking for a simple and functional headset at a good price point, with a few added bonuses thrown in, this is an amazing product. There are definitely snazzier and more expensive models out there - complete with all the bells and whistles - but unless you really need them, we reckon it's worth keeping your money and sticking with this model.

Alternatives To The Jabra Pro 920 Wireless Headset

You must look at the Sennheiser D10. It's their offering in the budget-friendly range and absolutely worth the very little extra for the additional features - particularly if you're on the phone a lot. It also comes with 2 wearing styles in the box. If you like Plantronics, the Poly Savi 7200 Series is in the same/higher quality bracket as the 920.

Most people are buying multi-use headsets to keep their options open. If convergence is in your future, it's a good idea to pay a little more to cover your bases now, rather than having to replace your headset down the track.
