Our Complete Guide to DECT Headsets

Picture this… You’re working from home and you’re on a call that’s going to close a massive deal… or maybe it’s simply to pick a new brand of coffee for the tearoom when everyone makes it back to the office. Both are equally important decisions. Did I mention it’s been raining for days and your backyard is a mud pit? Did I mention you have a 6-month-old golden retriever puppy who has now decided to bathe in said mud pit? You leap from your home office chair, scoot down the stairs and out into the yard. You’re still in your meeting by the way.
“How?” you cry in disbelief. “You’re in the yard!”
Excuse our smug grin in response but… you’re wearing a DECT headset. A DECT headset with unrivalled range. One you no doubt bought from Simply Headsets, obvs. On that note… let’s explore.

What is a DECT Wireless Headset?
Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. You can see why we go with DECT. Basically, it’s technology that allows devices to communicate wirelessly without being connected via cables. Yes we get it, sounds like Bluetooth right? But with DECT, you connect to a base unit that receives signals from another device, such as a cell phone, and then relays those signals to a headset or speaker. Techy right? So what it comes down to is what you intend to use your headset for while working. (Chasing muddy puppies before the leap onto the cream sofa while in the middle of a call, for example…) DECT headsets also help with wireless interference in offices as they dont interfere with Bluetooth channels shared by mice, keybaords, hpones and other devices that often cause congestion.
How does DECT technology actually work?
DECT phone systems can seamlessly roam between base stations without affecting call quality or interrupting service. These systems utilise a technology called Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) to enable mobile devices to switch frequencies rapidly to avoid interference from other wireless technologies. FHSS also allows multiple users to share the same channel simultaneously. So let’s put it into layman’s terms… if you’re working from home and want long range, low interference (imagine accidentally dropping in on the kids playing Minecraft while trying to close that multi million dollar deal. Or maybe getting down to the final two coffee choices… same same) where were we? Oh yes… If you want features that make your working life easier, a DECT headset might just be for you.
What are the best DECT headsets?
Jabra Engage 75
You get a connection! And you get a connection! You all get connections!! Seriously… you want connections? You need this headset on your head.
- High quality sound - Mono and stereo options, directional noise cancelling microphone and superior speakers
- Outstanding battery life with 13 hours of talk time and 52 hours of standby.
- Fast charge feature which gives you over 5 hours of talk time in just 30mins (we’ve all fallen asleep watching cat videos and forgot to charge overnight…right?)
- Increased density capacity so you can have 3 times as many headsets in a small space as before without the risk of interference.
Jabra Engage 65
The Engage 65 models come in 3 variants. All are compatible with Skype for Business and all major softphone applications. We’re all about choices around here.
- Battery life decreases with distance so with the unique 'Powernap' feature of the Engage, it extends standby time for 30 minutes.
- Built in busy light. On the mono and stereo versions this light is on both the earpiece and on the end of the microphone boom (or arm). On the convertible option it's just on the earpiece.
- The mute button is easy to locate on the mic itself and it will alert you if you’re chit chatting away forgetting you muted when your son ran in with a new joke about dinosaurs that absolutely couldn’t wait
- You can record calls made from mobiles or desk phones onto your computer – but get the okay from your caller first or the fuzz might be calling next.
Plantronics CS540
Lightweight, stylish, and comfortable, with an established reputation as one of our more popular headsets.
- Both over-the-ear and over-the-head to suit virtually every user - especially Nancy in accounts that gets her hair blow dried every week.
- Noise-cancelling microphone which cuts down much of the background noise. Really a must in these work from home environments where the neighbours are partying, the kids are arguing and you *may* have Golden Girls on the office TV (Dorothy would not approve).
- Intelligent adaptive power system that increases or reduces power consumption, based on your distance from the base station. This extends battery life and gives you up to 7 hours talk time.
EPOS Impact DW Pro 2
- Ultra noise cancelling microphone
- Comfortable headband duo wearing style
- Place the headset to the base and it automatically conferences multiple headsets to the call. We recommend against rolling your eyes at each other while on a call that could have been an email… but each to their own.
- 12-hour talk time (or 8 hours on high quality wideband), so even the heaviest users won’t cut out. Those marathon calls with marketing just got inescapable.
