The new Plantronics W720 is part of the latest 700 all-in-one series and it is a direct replacement for the run out SAVI WO 350. It is virtually identical to the 710 except it is binaural (2 ears). If you’re looking for a binaural headset this is literally the only model available that works with office + computer + mobile phones also.

However, it is very important to note that the W720 will not work with your mobile phone when outside of the office. If you are after a headset that works on the road too then you need to check out the Jabra 6470 GO. If it’s just for in and around the office then the 720 is a great choice.

There is only a small range of binaural headsets and the only other offerings are the run out CS361N (office phone only), the run out Plantronics SAVI W0350 (office + Computer) the Sennheiser DW Office Pro 2 (office + computer) or this latest SAVI 720 (3 in one!).

If you’re looking to answer calls away from your desk we also recommend you buy an HL10 handset lifter. This device fits on your telephone base and lifts the hand piece up or down when you push a button on your headset, letting you answer and hang up on calls from anywhere in the office. This is a very exceptional and unique headset so let’s start by reviewing…..

The Plantronics W720 offers the longest talk time (9 hours) and being binaural it’s very comfortable for all day wearing. If you spend more than 4 hours a day on the phone manufacturers actually recommend binaural for your hearing. If you’re looking for an over the ear, not over-the-head wearing style, then go for the W740 or if you want just one ear (monaural) then look at the 710.

The one touch controls for call answer/end, vol +/-, mute and flash are the same no matter whether you’re on your desk phone, your computer or your mobile phone. This is easy and makes switching between different applications a breeze.

The sound quality as you’d expect from Plantronics is brilliant. With the 2 ears it’s even better as you cut out so much background noise. Plus the headset comes with excellent noise cancelling too. The 720 also utilizes the latest DECT wireless technology and wideband audio. In fact, Plantronics claim that the 720 Enhanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology produces even more natural voice sounds than ever before.

One very smart addition to the W720 is Voice-dedicated DECT™ technology. This eliminates the possibility of interference with other wireless devises and uses a voice only signal. This is so clever but so logical and their R&D team really deserve kudos for this.

The Plantronics W720 also offers users their latest adaptive power system that increases or reduces power consumption, based on how far you walk away from the base station. This translates to extended battery life and gives you up to 9 hours talk time. Combine that with a rapid top-up recharge and you can walk and talk all day!

The Plantronics 720 wireless headset also features important SoundGuard technology. Without this feature you could potentially suffer from temporary/permanent hearing loss. This protects phone users from loud, potentially harmful noises. These acoustic shocks are transmitted down phone lines as a result of dangerous customers yelling, blowing whistles, electricity spikes, weather conditions, transmission faults and the like. Plantronics SoundGuard means you’ll be protected whenever you are using your 720 headset.

Like our very popular Sennheiser Pro 1, Pro 2 and DW office, you can also now conference in other 700 series headset users (up to 3). This is a brilliant feature in call centres and where a manager may need to get on the line.

Binaural headsets are always a love/hate item. Some people don’t like the fact that you can’t hear what’s going on around you. If you are on reception for example and have to greet people then it can be difficult. Others still find binaural models too bulky. That said, if you’re on the phone all day binaural is the best you can do – comfort, clarity and safe from a hearing-health perspective.

You have to also keep in mind that all-in-one units like the 720 can be slightly more expensive. You’re paying for the extra convenience. Before you buy a W720 (or the 740 or 710 models) you really need to work out what connectivity you actually need. Also you need to remember that the 720 only connects to your mobile within the confines of your office and can’t be taken on the road. The only headset that does that is the Jabra 6470.

Furthermore, if you don’t even need the computer connectivity and just need a wireless headset for your office phone then check out the CS520.

There are only a couple of headsets that do everything and if you’re after a genuine all-in-one for in and out of the office then it’s the Jabra 6470. It’s the only one you can take outside the office and on the go with you.

If you only need the mobile connectivity element for the office then the new Plantronics 720 binaural is brilliant and the only Plantronics one available today. If you don’t need binaural then you can also check out the 710 monaural and 740 with its multiple wearing styles.

We could say save a few dollars for the ne CS 520 but if you look at the pricing you’ll pay about the same for a whole lot less.
