The GN Netcom GN9120-NC has been around for a long time and is one of the world’s best selling headsets. However it has recently been replaced by the GN 9330e, and although the 9120-NC is a decent enough performer, is simply doesn’t offer value for money any more. 

If you’re looking to answer calls away from your desk we also recommend you buy a handset lifter. This device fits on your telephone base and lifts the hand piece up or down when you push a button on your headset, letting you answer and hang up on calls from anywhere in the office. The Good

At 8+ hours talk time, battery life on the GN Netcom GN9120NC is very good and callers will understand your every word thanks to the in-built noise cancelling technology. The flexible boom mic is a little more durable than metal alternatives and the GN9120NC offers the buyer the choice of two wearing styles: over-the-head and over-the-ear.  The over-the-head mode is our favourite, being lightweight and comfortable all day.  

The GN9120NC headset base station also shouldn’t be overlooked. It doesn’t take up too much space on a desk and is a lot more compact than other brands.    

The Not-So-Good

As we’ve mentioned, the Jabra GN 9120-NC is getting on a bit and unlike more modern headsets has not been designed for PC use. The future of headsets is moving towards voice and computer convergence, like the GN Netcom GN9350, Plantronics SAVI WO100, Plantronics SAVI WO200, Plantronics SAVI WO300 and the awesome Sennheiser DW Office and Sennheiser DW Office Pro 1. For only a little more these headsets let you use your headset for softphone IP applications, VoIP calls (like Skype) and voice recognition software (such as Dragon Speak 11 and MacSpeech).   Products like the Jabra GN 9120NC, however, only work with an office phone. If convergence is in your future (and it probably is) then pay a little more to cover your bases now, rather than having to replace your purchase down the track.  

The Verdict

Here at Simply Headsets we always push the golden rule of headsets: buy the best model you can afford. When you consider that the excellent GN 9330e is just a few dollars more yet is superior in almost every way, it’s a no brainer to ditch the Jabra GN9120-NC in favour of the new kid in town.
